Colorectal Surgeon Mr Andrew Clarke

Andrew Clarke is a Consultant General, Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon based at Poole Hospital with a private practice in Poole and Bournemouth.  After qualifying in Manchester in 1988 his postgraduate training was undertaken in the North West.  He worked at many of the major teaching hospitals including The Christie Hospital Cancer Institute and was awarded an MD Thesis in 2000. After a brief period working in America he took up a Consultant post at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2002, moving to Poole in 2004 where he set up the pelvic floor and laparoscopic service.

Andrew regularly performs endoscopy (colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy) and haemorrhoid surgery. He has longstanding experience in hernias especially key hole (laparoscopic) repair and sportsman’s hernia treatment.  Andrew has also built a national reputation for his specialist interest in pelvic floor disorders and when conservative measures have been exhausted he provides treatments for incontinence (sacral nerve stimulation, sphincter reconstruction, Sphinkeeper), prolapse repair and constipation. He is a National trainer for laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and the STARR procedure.

About Mr Andrew Clarke

Andrew currently lives in Wimborne, Dorset is married and has three grown up children. Andrew qualified from Manchester and trained in the North West. His early training was on a surgical rotation scheme based at Hope Hospital in Manchester and he gained the FRCS in 1993. He rotated through many of the major centres in the region in higher surgical training including the Christie Hospital Cancer Institute. An MD thesis for work on tumour blood flow in bowel cancer was awarded in 2000. After a brief period working in America he took up the position of consultant surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary in January 2002. In 2004 he moved to Poole and was one of three surgeons who ran the surgical unit. He developed laparoscopic (key hole) surgery and key hole hernia repair. Andrew has a sub-speciality interest in pelvic floor work and brought to Poole the first joint clinic with pelvic floor physiotherapists and founded the pelvic floor MDT meeting. Andrew has lead the evolution of this service since and this meeting is held now once a month and is a Dorset wide network meeting the first such county wide meeting within the UK. It is attended by specialists with an interest in this field from the three centres (Poole and Bournemouth – now combined as UHD – and Dorchester) including colorectal surgeons, gynaecologists, Radiologists, gastroenterologist, ano-rectal physiologists, specialist physiotherapists and nurse practitioners.
