What are cysts?
Skin cysts are round lumps, often filled with fluid or pus. They sometimes have a small, dark spot in the middle. They grow slowly and vary from smaller than a pea to several centimetres across.
Cysts are non-cancerous (benign) and usually cause no harm or problems. If infected, they can become sore or red. Skin cysts can form in most body areas, including the head, face, neck, chest, and back.
Most cysts form for no apparent reason, but some known causes of cysts include:
Blocked ducts, which cause a buildup of fluid
A defect in the cells
An impact injury that pops a blood vessel
A parasite
Infections
Clogged sebaceous glands
Tumours
Genetic conditions
Chronic inflammatory conditions
